While watching
"Bawal ang Pasaway kay Mareng Winnie", she said that the Philippines is the only nation in the world that does not allow divorce. She suggested that we should adapt it. One of the arguments was, since all the nations allow divorce, maybe its a good idea for us to have it too.
In ancient Israel, they too thought the same way. They said, "Give us a king to judge us like all the other nations have. We want to be like the nations around us." (1 Samuel 8: 4,20 NIV) Before this time, God already warned them saying "You must not live according to the customs of the nations I am going to drive out before you. Because they did all these things, I abhorred them." (Lev 20:23 NIV)
When it is a trend and a common practice around us, we think maybe its also a good idea. But the Bible says "Do not conform to the pattern of this world..." (Rom 12:2 NIV) Paul said, "Join with others in following my example, brothers, and take note of those who live according to the pattern we gave you." (Php 3:17 NIV) What is this pattern that the first apostles gave?
"Remember your leaders, who spoke the word of God to you. Consider the outcome of
their way of life and
imitate their faith." (Heb 13:7) Paul said, "And you should imitate me, just as I
imitate Christ." (1 Cor 11:1)
